LittleBigPlanet

LittleBigPlanet

For the Xbox 360 it was BioShock, a game that looked so great I felt compelled to purchase an Xbox 360. While I wanted a Blu-Ray player, the game that justified getting a PS3 was LittleBigPlanet. Now that I’ve played it, I have to admit it was worth every penny (meaning the game plus the $400 console).

Rarely does a game come along that I think to myself, “Wow! I haven’t seen that before.” The gameplay for LittleBigPlanet isn’t revolutionary. If you have played a platformer, like Super Mario Bros. before, then you know what to expect. Jump. Dodge. Run. Jump!

What makes LittleBigPlanet so freakin cool is a.) the style—it is amazing to look at and play. It creates a completely unique world both familiar and odd. And b.) customization, meaning you can customize your character and the world he or she plays in. After you’re done decorating the worlds created for you, you can create your own worlds to play in using the level creator or download levels that others have created and shared online.

The level of creation, and how amazing it looks when you are done, creates a whole other dimension of play, that I’ve rarely see in video games, making LittleBigPlanet, in my opinion, the best game of 2008.

Bedtime Stories

Bedtime Stories

Desperate to keep out 5-yr old entertained over the holiday break, we ventured out to see Adam Sandler go Disney in Bedtime Stories. Marking the first time we’d taken our little one to a theater to see a live action movie, surprisingly, we were all pleasantly entertained.

Adam Sandler tones down his normal antics to create kid-safe fare, but not without losing all the hallmarks you expect from an Adam Sandler movie. It wasn’t over the top in either regard, making for a funny movie that both grown up and kid can enjoy.

If you have a 5-10 year old, and enjoy Adam Sandler movies like Big Daddy, then chances are you’ll enjoy Bedtime Stories too.

PlayStation 3

PlayStation 3

I don’t consider the PlayStation 3 a gaming console, like the Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii. I bought it to watch Blu-Ray movies, something it does really well, it just happens to play video games too. The PS3 is more of an entertainment center than gaming console, something I wasn’t expecting.

You can buy or rent standard or HD movies. You can browse the Internet from a remote control. View photos, listen to music, watch movies from your network all in addition to Blu-Ray movies and PS3 games.

My only complaint, you can’t just sit down and insert a disc and start playing a game, you have to update and install each game, which can take 10-15 minutes at times. But otherwise for only a few dollars more than a standalone Blu-Ray player, I’d recommend the PS3 even if you were never to play any games on it.

Where will all the web developers go?

Interesting musings on where the web industry will go in 10-20 years. I spent a few months thinking about the future over the summer and got completely depressed.

Baby’s First Tweet

When mom’s start wearing devices to detect in utero movement, I’ll be shocked.

When mom’s start reading their unborn babies tweets, I will quietly pack up all my technology, give it to a school, and move to some remote village in Europe never to be heard from again.

Rom-coms 'spoil your love life'

“Films do capture the excitement of new relationships but they also wrongly suggest that trust and committed love exist from the moment people meet, whereas these are qualities that normally take years to develop.”
