"Caffeine-Free Diet Pepsi is torture in a 12-oz... →
If you haven’t tasted Caffeine-Free Diet Pepsi, but would like an idea of what it tastes like, do this - keep a straw in your pocket and wander around outside until you find a pigeon or squirrel that’s been dead for, oh, say three months. Stick the straw into the dead animal and suck. Caffeine-Free Diet Pepsi tastes like that, except worse. Plus, the taste lingers in your mouth for...

Xslimmer →
One challenge with the MacBook Air is making sure you don’t run out of hard drive space. Enter Xslimmer which is a nice $12 app that scans the file and removes unnecessary bloat, like PowerPC files and language translations contained within each app, which can be about 50% of the overall app size. Running it on 10 applications saved me 150 Mb of hard drive space and made them a bit...

If I could pick any other career to pursue it would be psychiatry. I’ve always been fascinated by figuring out how other peoples minds work. (It is no coincidence that my chosen field is the web, as I truly believe that it just as much about shrinking heads and understanding human behavior as it is art and technology.) So it is no surprise that I am totally enthralled with In Treatment (an...

How Clinton Campaign Mimics An Over-funded Startup →
The Obama campaign was “lean and mean”, with a focus on maximizing even the smallest increments of funding with indefatigable grass roots footwork — just like the best bootstrapped startups. (via tiffehr)

Today I had a great idea for a movie: A short film which features a man running from something in the city. Fast, always running, getting away from something. At the end, just when he thinks he escaped, someone walks up to him casually and shoots him like 10 times. I’m already 10 pages into my treatment.

iTunes Now Number Two Music Retailer in the US →
Apple today announced that iTunes is now the number two music retailer in the US, trailing only Wal-Mart.* The iTunes Store — now with over 50 million customers — has sold over four billion songs. In fact, it sold an incredible 20 million songs on Christmas Day 2007 alone. And with over six million songs from all of the major and thousands of independent labels, it offers the world’s largest music...

Tonight is Oscar night. Honestly, ever since 1991, when Dances with Wolves won best picture over Goodfellas, I began to lose interest in the process. The following year Silence of the Lambs swept up with wins for all the top prizes only confirming the inkling that whole affair was fixed. Ever year since it has been disappointment after disappointment, with a few surprise wins here and there for...

Notes from Jury Duty—100 people waiting in a room to be called is an awkward experience. We’ve only been here for two hours and you can tell that boredom has set in.
Feb 20th
Today I have to report for a Jury Summons. I received the summons about six months ago and postponed it. They told me to pick a random date on the calendar, so I picked today, thinking mid-February would be best time of the year. Boy was I wrong. I believe in serving my duty as a citizen, but now is the worst possible time to get selected as a juror. So I will report, wait to be called and hope...

I lost my voice yesterday. That has never really happened to me before. I can’t talk above a whisper and even then it is hard. You just try not to talk. It is really weird to not be able to communicate. It gets pretty frustrating. There were a few times I thought to myself, I can deal with this, but I wish I couldn’t hear what people are saying, then I wouldn’t be so frustrated...

One of my favorite features of the Kindle so far is book samples. You can browse titles on the Kindle or on Amazon.com and if you see something you like you can send a sample of the first couple chapters to your Kindle for free wirelessly. In a minute or two it just shows up in your book list. After you’ve read the first chapter it ends with a “like this book? buy it instantly, by...

Big Leopard Update! →
Leopard is by far the best Mac OS release to date, so its little quirks are all that more apparent. Nice to see such a big update come so quickly after the OS release. I guess they don’t take vacations down there in Cupertino.

AOL Announces Open Mobile Software Platform →
Yesterday at the Mobile World Congress (formerly known as 3GSM) in Barcelona, AOL announced it will release an Open Mobile Software Platform sometime this summer. From their press release: The new open platform will help stimulate innovation by providing developers with ready access to the tools and source code they need to build and distribute applications across all major mobile device...

Microsoft buys Danger →
Yesterday at the Mobile World Congress (formerly known as 3GSM) in Barcelona, Microsoft announced the acquisition of Danger Inc., the makers of the Danger Hiptop also known as the T-Mobile Sidekick. My take: The move is a good one for Microsoft, who relies on third-party hardware firms like HTC to deliver the Windows Mobile platform to consumers in the form of mobile handsets (Microsoft also...

AT&T to offer free Wi-Fi at Starbucks →
If you are like me you’ve always wondered exactly how long Starbucks would get away with charging for Wi-Fi at its 15,000 locations. We found out yesterday the answer was six years. Starting this year Starbucks will be ditching T-Mobile as default Wi-Fi provider in half of its retail locations in favor of AT&T. Opting to go the route that independent coffee houses have known for some time: if...

Edge Cases are the Root of all Evil →
In the restroom in of the La Patisserie in Portland, Oregon’s Pearl District, someone scrawled Bark Dust is the Root of All Evil. While that may certainly be true, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Edge Cases are the real Root of All Evil. Ever trustworthy Wikipedia defines Edge Cases as thus: An edge case is a problem or situation that occurs only at an extreme (maximum or minimum)...

The MacBook Air is the most perfect Apple laptop...
Many have been complaining about what the MacBook Air doesn’t include and to those I reply, do you really need it? In the world of technology we become so used to the ever increasing feature list of gadgets or software, that we tend to forget what we really need. That our actual needs are often quite simple. While new features are great, they can also become unwelcome clutter to our lives,...

Cyndi and I were getting into our car just now after a meeting at PJ’s school. A construction worker came up to us to see if we had just back from the Obama rally in Seattle. We had a brief conversation with this random guy standing in the street and us in our car. It was a little weird but interesting. I’m happy to see examples like this one these days. Finally the level of political...

The Immutable Laws of Web Design and Development →
Occasionally smart people say pretty smart things. The computing world likes to call these pearls of wisdom laws naming after the person that coined it, like the most well known of all the geek laws Moore’s Law. In the web industry we have no such laws. While computer software and engineering is a science, web work isn’t. I view it much more as an amalgamation of a variety of crafts and...

Had a great day snowboarding yesterday. I didn’t push myself too hard as I knew I two more days ahead of me and didn’t want to be too sore or injure myself. My rental gear pretty much sucked. The board was slow and little short for my taste. And I woke up with a major welt on the back of my leg from the boots. I’m really looking forward to breaking in my gear today.

Vancouver was great, but now it is time to head to Whistler. I’m up early to rustle up the family and drag them up to the Village so I can try to get in a few runs on some fresh snow. Nick is bringing up my new board, so today I will have to rent, but I’m looking forward to breaking in my new baby tomorrow.

Microsoft Bids $44.6 Billion for Yahoo →
Frankly, this is a good deal for Microsoft and a good deal for Yahoo. I hope Yahoo’s shareholders accept the offer. The “Yahoo strategy” did an excellent job of motivating the Web 2.0 Movement, but struggled against the larger Google. If Microsoft can provide the cash and Yahoo the innovation, I think this would be good for everyone, including us.
