Problems with your Mac? Just re-install the Apple... →
My MacBook Air started freaking out late last week. A bunch of services weren’t working as expected after I installed the most recent security update. I spent hours trolling Apple support for any hints of a fix. Not finding anything, I figured my only salvation would be to do a re-install or something drastic. But thanks to the help of Garrett and his regular readership of Daring Fireball,...

Huge Antarctic Ice Shelf on the verge of collapse →
The Wilkins Ice Shelf, the largest in the Antarctic Peninsula is “hanging by a thread — we’ll know in the next few days and weeks what its fate will be.” Jim Elliot, who captured video of the breakout said to MSNBC.com, “I’ve never seen anything like this before — it was awesome. We flew along the main crack and observed the sheer scale of movement from the...

Bush's War →
Frontline aired the first part of a great piece called Bush’s War, about the lead up to war or terror and the Iraq War. Frontline has previously aired several great pieces on the powers of executive branch and how this period in history is like no other before it. Bush’s War uses many of these previous segments to create an engrossing timeline of events that touched all branches...

Leopard has a very annoying bug that if you delete a calendar in iCal it will notify everyone you have ever invited to an event… that’s everyone. So if you have a years worth of events, expect to send out a couple hundred emails. This makes it very problematic if you want to migrate a static calendar to say Google Apps, or… I don’t know, just want to delete an old...

Rainbow Six Vegas 2
I started playing Rainbow Six Vegas 2 this weekend. Which promptly reminded me why I’ve never really gotten into any of the Tom Clancy games…. they are freaking hard! I started playing on the middle difficulty, but I die so frequently that I’m wondering if I should start over in the casual mode. I don’t think you are supposed to take two hours to get through the first...

Well PJ stopped throwing up on the hour and seems to be feeling fine today. But now Cyndi’s fever has gone back up. Amazingly I haven’t gotten sick yet, thanks to Emergen-C, Purell and washing just about everything in sight of a sick person.

The secret to making the perfect barf bucket, is first having a large stainless steel bowl. I mean really large, you really need to be able to wretch into the thing, being able to grab on to the sides and throw your weight into it and it needs to be deep too. I found a 18-incher at IKEA several years ago that is perfect. Next you need to line it with paper towels or newspaper, which is the real...

John Adams
I watched the first two episodes of HBO’s John Adams last night and I was amazed! Not just with the performances of Paul Giamatti or Laura Linney, but with the dialogue (a lot of it taken directly from letters and transcripts) and how intricately the period is portrayed. It is incredibly fascinating to see the personalities of each of our founding fathers. Many, like George Washington...

For some reason I’m really into soundtracks at the moment. I don’t know if it is the memory of a good movie, the allure of the modern day mix tape or just damn good music. Lately I’ve been into the Juno soundtrack and the distinctive style of Kimya Dawson, which was as integral to the mood and spirit of the film as Ellen Page’s performance. Also featured on Juno is A Well...

Today is my birthday. That’s right, the same day we drink green beer and pinch people for not wearing the right color. The day everyone pretends they can drink like the Irish, only to remember the next day that they can’t. St Patrick’s Day. Its always been one of my favorite fake holiday’s, probably because I get presents every year. Hallmark makes one St....

Are we in a recession or not? →
The unemployment rate is high, the dollar is low, people are losing their homes, gas is likely to hit $4 a gallon. What the hell is going on? No one wants to admit that we are in a recession. Fearing that by admitting it that the economy will somehow get worse. Here is an idea: what about admitting that we are in a recession and lets start talking about what we are going to do to get out of it?

Is The Future of Movies… Free?! →
Slash Film, inspired by the recent Wired cover story, runs the numbers to show that it would be possible to show movies in theaters for free. Having spent a bit of time in the movie exhibition business myself, I believe this is completely possible and could actually be a benefit to the lagging movie industry. In Portland, Oregon the local micro-brew behemoth McMenamins runs a number of pub...

MacBook Air selling strongly... surprised? →
Geeks have a tendency to drastically overestimate the value of extendability, number of ports, and benchmarks while drastically underestimate the value of design, feel, and convenience as perceived by regular people. This would seem a case in point. 37signals talks about the demand for MacBook Air’s and quotes ArsTechnica’s report on the demand, for what I consider to be the most...
