Amazon Kindles are Back in Stock! →
I had to wait months to get mine. And it is one of the best purchases I’ve made. While certainly not for everyone, the Kindle is a great product, especially for occasional book readers like me. So if you ever found yourself wanting to read more books, I highly recommend the Kindle. The Kindle store allows you to download free samples of books, allowing you to make sure you will be into...

Tumblr seems to be a little bit broken today. Text posts seem to be working fine but descriptions for other content types seem to not be working.

Here are my slides from my Web 2.0 Expo workshop on Mobile 2.0 and the iPhone. Having “tested my material on the road” at Mobile Monday Austin and Over the Air, this line up of slides seems to have performed well. I guess that my talk “generated the most post-conference buzz for that day.” View my slides at Fling Media or at Slidehare

Quoted in the Examiner →
Wow, it looks like I was heavily quoted in this article in the San Jose Examiner. The author included some of my quotes from others, notably Tomi Ahonen’s 7th Mass Media, as well as my embarrassing goof on the percent of all traffic (which I’ve contacted him to correct) and was corrected during the Q&A of the workshop.

My Climate Clock Idea →
For about a year now I’ve had this idea to create a single page website featuring a large clock, counting down the time we have left until some sort of catastrophic global event caused by climate change. Basically a combination of the national debt clock, the doomsday clock and a death clock. The goal would be show the effects of climate change in very real terms, helping build awareness of...

Okay, I’m going to do it. For one project I’m going to try and use Pixelmator instead of Photoshop. If you don’t know, Pixelmator is an all GPU-powered image editor based on the open source project ImageMagick. But it also has all the cool tools of Apple’s Core Image technology built right in. It is wicked fast! It has a nice clean interface and almost all the features of...

Should I Support IE6 by Default?
I’m certain this will draw a lot of criticism, but hey its Friday. I’m seriously debating whether I should continue supporting Internet Explorer 6 for my clients by default. Instead offering IE6 support as an optional service for an additional cost. Given that IE7 is a mandatory upgrade for all Windows users and with the numbers of IE6 are rapidly dwindling, is it something that...

Actor Tim Robbins gives the keynote address to the National Association of Broadcaster’s (NAB) annual conference. He makes an eloquent and passionate plea to the broadcasting community to be “better than that.” Likely inspired by Edward R. Murrow’s speech to the Radio-Television News Directors Association and Foundation in 1958, featured in the film Good Night and Good Luck,...

Last night I watched The Green Mile for only the second time, having not seen it since it first came out on video, and this time watching it in HD. First and foremost, I forgot how long it was, being nearly 3 1/2 hours. But I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, far more than I did the first time I watched it. It had a great ensemble cast, each delivering good performances all around....

Suddenly, and for no apparent reason, my right eyelid will sometimes start twitching. Like I’ve developed some sort of nervous tic. It is very annoying. I feel like everyone can see my eyelid fluttering, but I guess it is completely unnoticeable. Cyndi thinks it happens because of stress. I think it happens because of increased eye strain. Whatever the reason, it is irritating. Usually is...

A fascinating report from last Sunday’s 60 Minutes on a very possible cure for cancer using harmless radio waves and nano particles. What is truly amazing about this story is the idea was invented by an amateur, John Kanzius. A liver cancer surgeon working on the cure with Kanzius said, “I’ve gotta tell you, in 20 years of research this is the most exciting thing that I’ve...

A very cool music video performed by Playmobil Pirates. I love how they were able to capture a cinematic look and tell the story just through camera movement and good editing, and not having to resort to stop motion to create motion. See “Castaway” in HD on Vimeo

Six Sites: Is there a need for New Newsreader? →
I’ve been thinking a lot about RSS Readers lately. I’ve always been partial to desktop newsreaders like Newsfire, but the allure of the multi-context flexibility of online readers like Google Reader has found me thinking about switching camps. But one issue seems to be holding me back: All the online newsreaders are so UGLY! Help me decide if I should tackle creating a New Newsreader.

My Interview on the BBC →
Here is the link to last weeks radio segment on the Over the Air event. I was interviewed by Peter Price about my thoughts on Mobile 2.0 and the iPhone, of which a portion of my comments were included in the episode which was aired around the world on the BBC World Service. The segment starts at 19:35.

Two more ideas today... →
Argh! I just had two more great ideas this morning. Both would only take a couple weeks each to do, but the revenue potential on either wouldn’t be as high initially as the original six ideas. Since both of these ideas would make for perfect open source projects, I wish I could just spend a few days on designs and jot down notes on the features and publish them. Maybe try to attract a handful of...

If I were the United States Postal Service I would create a premium product/service to hold all paper mail, scan it and email it to households that choose to have the service. Sending all the digitized paper to recycling centers. If USPS offered such a service, I would certainly pay a decent monthly service charge for the added conveinence, as I think many others like me would as well. It amazes...

My earlier inclinations that my errant SyncServer process was being caused by some sort of cross Atlantic technical glitch proved to be incorrect. When I returned home, the SyncServer process kept reaching into the 90-100% range of my CPU on a regular basis, making my MacBook Air unusable. I couldn’t even open the .Mac Preferences to turn off syncing without System Preferences crashing....

So Cyndi and I decided to head over to Café Ladro in Fremont this morning after we dropped off PJ at school, as we’ve been doing many mornings over the past month, and on our way home, got hit by a 40 foot semi trailer while stopped at a red light. The truck was turning right from the left hand lane. I had been driving alongside him for the last block, so I wasn’t able to see his...

Completely Mad for Archer →
Any typography snob will see that I’ve used the typeface Archer pretty liberally among all my sites that I’ve launched today. I’ve found it to be a very distinctive and all purpose typeface. Typically I try to force myself and not lean on one typeface too much, but after trying so many different type options Archer just worked where ever I put it. It especially made for a...
