What is it, exactly, that the Vice President does every day?

IE Death March →
I cannot agree with this more. IE6 should no longer be supported. Microsoft has ended its support of it, so should we.
The web standards movement wouldn’t exist had we not drawn the line in the sand on Netscape 4, we need to do the same with IE6.

Obama picks Biden as VP with 3AM Text Message →
Earlier I was praising the Obama campaign for the idea of announcing he VP via text message.
The message was sent out at 3 AM Saturday morning, probably the absolute worst time of the week you could tell anyone anything. The bad timing completely missed the point of being able to have the one to one connection of text messaging.
I guess we’ll have to wait to see how mobile will help...

Mobile developers in demand... again →
Good mobile dev’s have been hard to come by for a few years now, but mostly in the Java world. With the iPhone we are starting to see the demand for developers in the Cocoa space increase as well, but it has also accelerated development efforts in across the board.
If you are a developer, now is a good time to be looking into mobile. If you are a business looking for good mobile...
The Future of the Desktop
→
Some interesting thoughts on the future of the desktop, how we are moving from the desktop to the browser. Though the article is completely missing… dare I say the “m-factor” (there I said it), the impact mobile technology will have on todays paradigms.
While one could argue that the mobile browser fits into the argument, but I think that is trying too hard to squash our vision...
T-Mobile to be the first to offer Android →
Good. Now I can talk about this, or at least I can say: I’ve seen the T-Mobile Android phone and it looks good.
No Push in iPhone 2.1b Firmware →
It looks like the most recent iPhone firmware (2.1 beta 4) that has been seeded to developers is missing push notification.
I can’t say I’m surprised. The push notification session I attended at WWDC was pretty bare on details, even by Apple’s “we don’t talk about unreleased features” standards. There seemed to be quite a lot of quirks that hadn’t...
Pandora's "Last Stand" →
The company that makes one of the best applications for the iPhone is about to close its doors.
“We’re approaching a pull-the-plug kind of decision,” said Tim Westergren, who founded Pandora. “This is like a last stand for webcasting.”
Traditional radio pays nothing in performance royalties, though SoundExchange [the organization that represents performers...

Medieval Peasants Had More Vacation Than You →
Based on the historical research of family rights advocate John De Graff, medieval peasants took more time off—about two weeks more—than modern American families.
Americans get the shortest vacations in the industrial world. A Harris poll found that only 14 percent of Americans took the traditional two-week summer vacation in 2007. Another survey completed by Gallup, found that 40 percent of...

Patients 'free from cancer' after immune-boost... →
Cancer patients have been left free of the disease after being treated with a new drug which harnesses the power of their own immune cells.
While the effects of the immune boost treatment have only been tested in blood cancer, there is hope that is might be adapted to work against other types of cancer.

Converting gas-powered cars to electric →
For about $12,000 you can convert your gas powered car to electric. Larry Horsley of Georgia converted his Chevy S-10 to electric six months ago.
Horsley says “Anyone who has basic mechanical skills can build one of these, but it takes time.” Mostly waiting for parts. He estimates he already saved $700 in gas alone.
Hopefully supplies will start becoming more available and auto...

Best Buy to carry Apple iPhone 3G at its stores →
Big news for the iPhone and for the mobile web. Having a footprint in the largest chain of electronics stores in the US will allow the common American to learn more about what the modern mobile phone can do.
They will be able to see the true mobile web, probably for the first time.

Obama Will Announce His Running Mate By Text... →
Sometime between now and the convention, Barack Obama, just like the cool kid in study hall, will surreptitiously send a text message announcing his pick for vice president.
A brilliant idea for the progressive candidate. Not only will it reduce the cost of increasing voter turnout, but it allows Obama to develop powerful one-to-one messaging with potential voters.
Leveraging the mobile...

Food and oil prices push US inflation to highest... →
The cost of living in the US surged at twice the rate expected last month to the fastest annual level in 17 and a half years, official data showed today, due to spiralling food and oil prices.

Movable Type adds Community →
At long last Movable Type has added community features into its core product, previous only available as an add-on to their higher end product. I had a chance to preview these earlier this year and it works really well if you need to add some basic community features.

Oil Addiction →
I like how gas prices near $5 a gallon, people freak out and start taking dependency on oil seriously and start changing their behavior. Then the oil companies have record profits, but drop oil prices citing “a sharp slowdown” in demand.
It sounds like the classic pusher-user relationship. The price fluctuations seemed more based on how much people are willing to spend rather than by...

Possible Alien Radio Signal Heard →
A Durban lecturer and his students have detected a radio source, possibly from an alien source, from beyond the solar system with the aid of their specially built radio telescope.
While it is still early it is certainly exciting news for the search for extraterrestrial life. The signal originates from Sagittarius A in the center of the Milky Way galaxy—in the same cosmic neighborhood as...
'Prepare for extinction' →
More bad news on the global warming front. Oliver Tickell, author of Kyoto2 says:
We need to get prepared for four degrees of global warming, Bob Watson told the Guardian last week. At first sight this looks like wise counsel from the climate science adviser to Defra. But the idea that we could adapt to a 4C rise is absurd and dangerous. Global warming on this scale would be a catastrophe that...
Part of the Beijing Opening Ceremony Fireworks... →
The opening ceremonies were completely breathtaking. One of the most amazing things I’ve every seen… well until the parade of nations and then I just fell asleep and watched the torch lighting later.
It appears that some of the Fireworks shown in the broadcast, specifically the footsteps leading up to the ‘Birds Nest’ National Stadium were computer graphics and added to...
The Virtual iPod: over the air streaming to mobile... →
If you have played with Apple’s iPhone Remote app, or Pandora, you can get a sense where things are going with mobile media.
Since phones are always on devices and with the proliferation of faster networks, there is no reason why we can’t tether and stream content, or access documents, emails, etc. to our mobile devices.

Tumblr & Product Evolution →
I love Tumblr. It is a great service and just works well. But, lately I’ve been thinking of jumping ship. Why? because anytime I want to try something new I seem to run into a wall. When I try to get help, my pleas seem to go unheard.
This got me thinking about product evolutions. How do you evolve your product, especially in the early days, to recruit early-adopters and turn them into your...

Greyhound pulls 'bus rage' ads →
In a very gruesome bit of irony, Greyhound has pulled the recently launched slogan, “There’s a reason you’ve never heard of bus rage” after a passenger beheaded another passenger last week in Canada.
“We just felt, in light of the recent incident, it could be a very offensive message and we didn’t think it was appropriate for it to be run any...
Did a New York couple really give $61,600 to... →
A normal white bread family that just happens to work for an oil company donated $61,600 to the McCain/GOP fund, a price out of reach for most middle income families.
…the couple is too “under-employed” to be making donations that large, the official said.
So either the family really wants McCain in office by donating over a years worth of middle class salary or something...
