Apple is outperforming the competition by such a huge margin that UBS is taking Apple out of the S&P 500 to get a more accurate picture of the tech market.

The results are striking: For all the companies in the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index, earnings are on track to post a 6.6% year-on-year rise in the fourth quarter. Once Apple’s earnings are factored out, the expected fourth-quarter gain shrivels to just 2.8%, according to UBS.

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the fact that design has a massive role to play in the evolution of the web and the next generation of web products.

I love the sentiment here, but I think this goes beyond just “designing cool shit.”

It is partnering technology with someone that understands how people think. How to make something meaningful, that maybe, maybe, maybe changes their lives.

"I used to think that all relationships need the kind of violent shove that a crush brings, just to..."

“I used to think that all relationships need the kind of violent shove that a crush brings, just to get you started and to push you over the humps. And then, when the energy from that shove has gone and you come to something approaching a halt, you have to look around and see what you’ve got. It could be something completely different, it could be something roughly the same, but gentler and calmer, or it could be nothing at all.”

- Nick Hornby / High Fidelity

Steve Jobs rumored to have shot down Push Pop Press for iBooks Author

Steve Jobs rumored to have shot down Push Pop Press for iBooks Author:
This makes complete sense. Which can be summarized with his two takeaways:

First of all, the number of people making serious money selling apps is pretty small. Second, that doesn’t matter very much, because we’re so early in the game that we don’t know how it’s going to shake out.

Another choice remark is his comment that today’s mobile apps are a race to the bottom:

Selling anything on a one-time basis at a price below $10 is historically the kind of business that’s been owned by companies like Walmart

This is something I’ve previously written about as well as did a talk at iOSDevCamp Seattle, while some things are changing, most has stayed the same.

Essentially the way you make money in mobile hasn’t substantially changed in over ten years, you just don’t have to work through a carrier. This question is currently at the heart of this trillion dollar industry, but it isn’t about mobile, it is about how you add value to peoples lives. And that isn’t constrained to just your devices.

How many apps have you published?

How many apps have you published?:
Interesting poll on Hacker News about how many apps developer are publishing.
